Frequently asked questions about the services offered
Since I'm an Intern, I may have to consult with my clinical supervisor, Ellen Connell, which means my services can be accessed at a reduced rate. Please reach out if you are struggling to access counselling due to the cost, as services are offered on a sliding scale based on what is manageable for you.
Unfortunately, no. Although there are some overlapping skills, techniques, and knowledge domains, the overarching goals are different. Additionally, VR and Counselling use different approaches and interventions, and have different governing bodies (Associations) that set the conditions for offering services.
It would be considered a "dual relationship" to begin clinical counselling sessions if we are already engaged in VR services. If you find that you might benefit from a different service, I can help connect you to someone who can support you.
People can be referred for Counselling for just about anything, and a lot of the time it's to help them get through a stressful event or period in their life. There is a difference between being diagnosed with a mental illness and experiencing symptoms of mental illness. For example, someone can be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) while another person experiences symptoms of anxiety or depression. Therapy for a mental health diagnosis (e.g., Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder) is typically done with a Registered Psychologist who has a doctoral degree and more extensive clinical training.
If you're having periods of low mood after a relationship breakup or experiencing anxiety about an upcoming event or exam, a Master's level Clinical Counsellor would be appropriate. Some Clinical Counsellors complete specialized training certifications to offer advanced therapeutic techniques and may treat clients with specific diagnoses.
Great question! Since I am busy completing my Master's of Counselling internship, I have reduced my caseload for VR services to part-time and am no longer offering Kinesiology services for ICBC customers.
As a Clinical Intern, my counselling services can be accessed through Ellen Connell Counselling and Neurotherapy.
I am also completing additional certifications as a VR consultant to eventually offer Transferable Skills Analyses (TSA) and Vocational Evaluations. I work under the guidance of my mentor, Jodi, at Key Rehabilitation Services. Connect Now
Direct services with WorKin Rehab Kelowna are anticipated to begin in January 2024! If you are a healthcare provider interested in learning more about WorKin Rehab, contact Tanis at 250-899-2400 | tanis@workinrehab.com
You do not need to be referred by another healthcare provider to start services (for VR or for Counselling). You may wish to check with your insurance provider if services are covered. Currently, counselling sessions may be offered at a subsidized (reduced) rate while I complete my clinical internship. Vocational services are typically covered by your insurance provider. If you do not have insurance coverage for VR services, please contact us for rates.
Counsellors will complete some paperwork and may write brief progress reports or treatment plans if requested by your insurance company only with your expressed consent. However, it is outside of the scope of practice for a Clinical Counsellor to provide a diagnosis. While some counsellors have special training to treat mental health conditions, we do not "diagnose" our clients. Speak to your Family Doctor if you have medical documents to complete.
Counselling sessions are 50-minutes long. Why? We use the extra time to make brief notes of what was accomplished or addressed during the session, or any new concerns that you'd like to address in the next session. The notes don't contain extensive details about each and every session, but allow for better continuity of care and ensure we accomplish your goals for therapy. See our Privacy Policy or ask your counsellor for more information if you have any concerns.
I can do vocational tests and other types of screening assessments with you, however, I am not qualified to administer and interpret psychoeducational assessments to diagnose learning disabilities. Reach out to your family doctor for more information
If you are interested in vocational assessments (i.e., interest, aptitude, values, etc.) for the purposes of career exploration, click here for contact information
I offer Counselling sessions on a flexible schedule on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you work long hours or don't have time during the week, I am happy to figure out a time that fits with your schedule, however may not be able to accommodate all requests.
